Opportunity Group is a fully inclusive ‘Stay and Play’ session offering a variety of experiences for families to share together. The group welcomes babies and toddlers from 6 months to the term after their 3rd birthday.
Charnwood’s qualified and experienced staff and volunteers provide a friendly face, practical support and a chance for you to have a cuppa!
If children are going to apply for a place at Charnwood Nursery, we recommend they spend some time in Opportunity Group. This gives them the chance to become familiar with the nursery staff and enables Charnwood to build a relationship with the family.
The Setting
Morning and afternoon sessions take place on Wednesdays at St Paul’s Church, Heaton Moor and on Fridays at Emmanuel Community Church on Green Lane, Heaton Moor.
Morning sessions run from 9.45am to 11.15am and afternoon sessions run from 1pm-2.30pm.
What can I do at Opportunity Group?
Explore – Children get the opportunity to explore a new space.
Heuristic Play Area – Here children can explore real-life, everyday objects allowing for open-ended discovery.
Activities at the home table – Using materials you are likely have in your kitchen, you can take away different ideas for activities to try at home.
Circle Time – Staff, children and parents come together to sing and sign a variety of action rhymes, take part in a sensory story or join in with fun music and movement songs.
Snack Time – Children experience tasting healthy and homemade snacks.

The areas of play are carefully planned and are set out for continuous provision. Over time your children will become familiar with the areas developing skills such as concentration, problem solving and independence. It also encourages children to make choices and initiate their own play. At each session there is:
- A large construction area.
- A creative and investigation area, well stocked with different materials and textures.
- Water play with a variety of pouring and filling equipment and natural resources.
- A baby area.
- Light and sound sensory toys.
