Facilities

The purpose built nursery was opened in 1979. Since then it has been extended and updated to meet the needs of today’s children. Further extension work is currently taking place. It is a 2 storey building, with a lift to make the first floor accessible for children who can’t climb the stairs.

On each floor, there are modern toilet and changing facilities, a light/sensory room, a soft play room, areas for quiet and also for larger group activity. Each floor also has areas for painting and “messy” activities; downstairs has a sunken sandpit.

Also downstairs is the kitchen where lunches are prepared, and where children’s baking can be cooked, and a family room which also serves as a place for parents and other visitors to have a cup of tea and relax.

Outside, there are different landscaped play areas, including a large area of grass and natural landscaping, a mud kitchen, an area for bikes and cars, a soft surface play area with climbing equipment, a sensory garden, and an area where children can plant and grow. The fish pond provides year round interest.

Charnwood is a very busy place, and most spaces are used for several different purposes each day. This helps to create some of the atmosphere and togetherness that is part of the Charnwood experience.
