We have a highly trained and experienced staff team, which includes teachers, nursery nurses, a family support worker, and kitchen and lunchtime support staff. We maintain high staffing levels on the nursery floor, of at least one member of staff to five children. Some children have much higher staff support ratios.
Throughout each year, all Charnwood trust employees have staff team training together, so that existing skills can be updated, and new skills learnt. Significant training also takes place through modelling of good practice and team discussion and planning. Individually, staff training needs are assessed, and they are encouraged to attend courses and conferences.
To support specific children, we work closely with the physiotherapy team and have regular contact with occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, educational psychologists and social workers. At the time of transition both into and on from Charnwood, the staff invest considerable time and effort to ensure minimal disruption to each child.
Some, not all, staff are practicing Christians, but all have to work within the Christian ethos of the nursery. This means that very high standards of behaviour, vocabulary and activity are required and expected from each staff member.
We offer training placements to students from various professional courses. We cannot accommodate all applications, but those students who do come to Charnwood are supervised by staff and expected to behave and practice their skills with the same dedication as the rest of the staff team. Charnwood is a rich learning experience for all concerned, and the children’s learning can only be enhanced when adults are learning alongside them.
Charnwood also welcomes volunteers, and aims to find them activity which will use their interest and skill, and provide them with support to learn new skills if they so wish.
The safety and welfare of the children in our care remains paramount, and all staff, visiting professionals, students and volunteers have to undergo various statutory checks before they are able to join in at Charnwood.
Jobs at Charnwood are advertised on the Job Vacancies page on this website, the Stockport Council jobs website, and sometimes in the press. Charnwood was re-accredited with Investor in People status in 2014.
